Trion went through a round of layoffs May 17, 2013.

IGN broke a story on Friday 17th May, that Trion was hit with massive layoffs.

Trion Worlds has been hit by layoffs. IGN sources suggest that well over half the company has been let go, with some suggesting numbers as high as 80%.

The forums burst into rampant speculation, and there was a lot of chatter around the net.

A few hours later a Trion representative called the claims false.

To best position Trion in a rapidly changing industry, we have reorganized our teams and are expanding our free to play offering. With Defiance, we delivered a great game that more than one million gamers registered to play and continue to enjoy. As we progress from launch to ongoing development of the game, we are adjusting our staffing levels to deliver new content and improved features. RIFT, and our other titles in development, were unaffected by these changes. We are very much looking forward to the free to play release of RIFT and are excited by the other new titles currently in development.

Sledgehammer the Defiance Community Manager added to the forum post

This is an important topic to chime in on, and is not one we are taking lightly here at the studio.

Please be assured the Defiance team is still supporting the game, DLC and future Season 2 content. Myself, Myll_Erik and the rest of the community team will remain here to continue to support the Defiance community and work with our development team to continue to improve upon the game.

Yes some of our team members did get let go today, but the support for Defiance will remain moving forward.

It is worth remembering that the team that creates the game will always be much larger than the team that creates new content for the game. However if the game was doing well enough you would expect them to continue to develop it.

We all know the state of the game at the moment, we know what needs to be done. We have also heard the plans for the next DLC, it sounds like improvements are coming but they are slower than we may have liked.

Patch 1.016 will be released on Monday , 20 May 2013.

My advice, enjoy the game that exists currently, and stop worrying about the future. Once you stop enjoying the game, stop playing. You have bought it, you can return to it at any time in the future.

I personally am pretty happy with the updates and fixes they've provided so far.  The biggest gripe I have is the ridiculous ly ill-designed weapon skill leveling.  I am especially happy with being able to play through the Nolan and Irisa missions.  I felt like there was some sort of bait and switch when I bought the game and couldn't play through "to the show."  It's pretty stupid they ever made them unavailable.  I don't see a problem with removing the outfit rewards if that was the reasoning behind taking them away.  The single largest problem I have with the game; other than running out of content at 1/4 of max level(ish), is that I can't use the weapon I want, with the mods I want, until I have reached level 20 skill with other throw away weapons.  I should be able to use whatever weapon I want, use it a lot, and get much better while using it.

I do agree with some of your points but Trion have a huge page lined up for tomorrow: Patch 1.020, so that has made me feel a little more at ease.

Granted, these were all probably worked on before the layoffs.

As a 3D Game Artist (B.A. Visual Art - Game Art. 2009). I have more than just a gamers interest in video games. I am particularily interested in the models/art obviously both assets and characters and environment. I'm not a coder so programming is alien to me.

I was stoked to see the birth of Defiance. I thought ok here comes a game that will bridge scifi television with a video game MMO but I think my expectations were to high. While the show is awesome and has the ability to progress to another epic 5-7 years in seasons, the game is a flop. As a shooter it's missing 90% of the guts other shooters have especially in weapon customization and realistic weapon stats and operation. It lacks some really basic things that all MMO's even the worst ones have, like ongoing character customization (simple things like your skin color, hair color are lost once you create your toon). Vehicle dynamics are 40% out of 100%, they need to go and learn a thing or two from the makers of APB reloaded, on vehicles. Art work while interesting is lackluster, floating items and vehicles and mission items and no apparent interest by Trion in fixing these things. Now they have the nerve to want to charge use for add-on packs. I think they need to use some hard lined talent get the game working as it should and correct all the blunders before they ask us for more money. Maybe the layoff is the talent that they could afford to let go lets hope they kept the ones that know what they are doing?.
